HORSES
PREY ANIMALS
LIVING WITH PREDATORS
BRIDGING THE GAP THROUGH POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT
While most people want a mutually respectful and benevolent relationship with horses, on a species level we are at opposite ends of life's spectrum: predators and prey. Because of this, our brains are hard wired to perceive life very differently. My goal for students is to help them see the world as every horse does: a prey animal living with predators. While my methods fall under the umbrella of natural horsemanship, I am actually teaching people to develop the awareness and coordination that horses know from birth. We humans tend to overlook the details; horses simply cannot do that because of how their brains work. They are always thinking, always in the moment, always ready to react. When you go into a stall with a horse down sleeping, it tells you they feel safe. You don’t need to have horses in your life to love them, but to make a real connection you must see life from their point of view. We have the ability through training and understanding to do just that. While the magic that is possible with horses is learned over time, everyone can see and experience the beginning firsthand.
